Description:

"Parda" by Maulana Syed Abul Ala Maududi is a comprehensive and authoritative treatise on the Islamic concept of hijab. It delves into the scriptural basis for hijab, examining the relevant verses of the Quran and the sayings and practices of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). Maulana Maududi presents a detailed argument for the obligatory nature of hijab for Muslim women, while also discussing its social, moral, and spiritual dimensions.

Key Topics Covered:

  • Quranic basis for hijab: The book analyzes the verses of the Quran that discuss hijab, interpreting their meaning and implications.
  • Prophetic traditions on hijab: It examines the hadith (sayings and practices of the Prophet) related to hijab, providing further context and understanding.
  • Purpose and significance of hijab: Maulana Maududi discusses the rationale behind hijab, emphasizing its role in promoting modesty, protecting women's honor, and maintaining social order.
  • Scope of hijab: The book addresses the specific requirements of hijab, including the extent of covering, the types of garments permissible, and the exceptions allowed.
  • Critique of opposing views: Maulana Maududi engages with different interpretations of hijab, presenting counter-arguments to those who view it as optional or restrictive.
  • Social and moral implications: He explores the broader social and moral benefits of hijab, arguing that it contributes to a healthy and virtuous society.

Importance and Influence:

"Parda" has been highly influential in shaping contemporary Muslim discourse on hijab. It has been widely read and cited by scholars and laypeople alike, becoming a key reference point for understanding the Islamic perspective on this important issue. However, it's also important to note that Maulana Maududi's views on hijab are not universally accepted within the Muslim community, and other interpretations exist.
