Greg's dad has had enough of his lazy and irresponsible behavior. He's decided that Greg needs some discipline and structure in his life, and he's threatening to send Greg to a military academy. This prospect terrifies Greg, who imagines a miserable existence filled with drills, early mornings, and tough instructors.
Greg tries everything he can think of to convince his dad that military school is a bad idea. He attempts to prove that he's responsible (with predictably disastrous results), and he even tries to sabotage his chances of getting in. Meanwhile, he's also dealing with the usual challenges of middle school, including his friendship with Rowley and the awkwardness of trying to fit in.
Throughout the book, Greg's fear of military school hangs over him, influencing his actions and creating plenty of humorous and stressful situations. He learns (or at least starts to learn) about responsibility, the importance of friendship, and the fact that sometimes, you have to face your fears, even if they seem overwhelming.
