The story of Prophet Lut (peace be upon him), known as Lot in English, and the "Nation of Sodom" is a significant narrative in Islam, with parallels to the accounts found in Judaism and Christianity. The Quran details his prophethood, his warnings to his people, their rejection of his message, and the subsequent divine punishment that befell them.

Prophet Lut's Mission:

  • Prophet Lut (peace be upon him) was a messenger of God sent to the people of Sodom (and other neighboring cities, often collectively referred to).
  • Islamic tradition states that Prophet Lut (peace be upon him) was the nephew of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) (peace be upon him).
  • He was commanded to preach monotheism (theOneness of Allah) and to guide his people away from their wicked practices.

The Sins of Sodom:

  • The Quran describes the people of Sodom as engaging in various transgressions, including inhospitality, robbery, and other evil deeds.
  • A particularly emphasized sin was their sexual misconduct, specifically "approaching men with desire instead of women." Prophet Lut (peace be upon him) strongly rebuked them for this "indecency" which was described as unprecedented.
  • When angels, disguised as handsome men, came to Prophet Lut (peace be upon him) as guests, the people of the city demanded that he hand them over for their immoral desires. Prophet Lut (peace be upon him) was deeply distressed and offered his daughters in marriage as a purer alternative, but they refused, stating their desire for his male guests.

Prophet Lut's Warnings and Prayer:

  • Prophet Lut (peace be upon him) tirelessly called his people to righteousness, urging them to abandon their sinful ways and fear Allah.
  • However, his warnings were met with ridicule, rejection, and even threats of expulsion.
  • Feeling helpless and facing severe opposition, Prophet Lut (peace be upon him) prayed to Allah for deliverance from the consequences of their actions.

The Arrival of the Angels and the Decree of Destruction:

  • Allah sent angels to Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) with news of Isaac's birth and also informed him of their mission to destroy the "guilty people" of Lut (peace be upon him).
  • These same angels then came to Prophet Lut (peace be upon him) in the guise of men.
  • After the incident with the townsfolk demanding his guests, the angels revealed their true identities to Prophet Lut (peace be upon him) and informed him of the impending destruction.
  • They instructed Prophet Lut (peace be upon him) to leave the city with his family during the night and not to look back.

The Punishment:

  • As Prophet Lut (peace be upon him) and his believing family members left the cities, a severe punishment befell the inhabitants.
  • The Quran describes this punishment as turning the cities upside down and raining down on them stones of baked clay.
  • Prophet Lut's wife, described as an unbeliever, lagged behind and was also destroyed in the catastrophe.

Islamic View of Sodom and Gomorrah:

  • The story of Prophet Lut (peace be upon him) and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah is a significant warning in Islam against engaging in immoral and unnatural acts.
  • The Quran's condemnation of the people's actions, particularly their sexual behavior, is clear.
  • Muslims traditionally view this event as a historical reality and a testament to Allah's power and justice.
  • While the primary sin of the people of Sodom is often associated with homosexual acts, the Quran also mentions other transgressions like inhospitality and robbery, highlighting a general societal corruption.

Quranic References:

The story of Prophet Lut (peace be upon him) and his people is mentioned in several Surahs (chapters) of the Quran, including:

  • Al-A'raf (7:80-84)
  • Hud (11:77-83)
  • Al-Hijr (15:57-77)
  • Al-Ankabut (29:28-35)
  • As-Saffat (37:133-138)
  • Adh-Dhariyat (51:31-37)
  • Al-Qamar (54:33-39)

These verses detail Prophet Lut's (peace be upon him) message, the people's rejection, their immoral practices, the arrival of the angels, the command to leave, and the devastating punishment that destroyed the cities.

The narrative serves as a powerful reminder in Islamic teachings about the consequences of defying divine guidance and engaging in widespread corruption and immorality.
